The Japanese Garden in Wrocław lies in Szczytnicki Park, a short walk from the Centennial Hall. It was created in 1913 as part of an exhibition and was meant to be temporary, but it stayed for good. Its present form comes from the 1996 restoration, carried out under the guidance of the Japanese specialist Prof. Ikuya Nishikawa with the help of gardeners from Japan.
The visit starts at the monumental gate, from where a wide path leads to the central part with a roofed bridge over the pond. The garden is divided into areas of different character: a public section, a water garden with a cascade and a space linked to the tea ceremony. Water, stone and carefully trained plants build the composition.
Around 270 taxa of trees and shrubs typical of the Japanese climate grow here, and some plantings date back to the early 20th century. The busiest times are the spring bloom of cherries and azaleas and the autumn colours of the maples.
