Franciszek Kachel Municipal Park is the largest green area in the centre of Bytom and one of the main leisure spots for its residents. It was laid out in 1840 on the initiative of the Tiele-Winckler family and was open to the townspeople from the start. It covers several dozen hectares near Tarnogórska Street, right next to the city-centre buildings.
The Hill of Love with a gazebo and benches rises in the central part. A network of paths, including an educational trail and the Alley of Muses, runs around ponds with islands and a picturesque little bridge. Along the way you pass sculptures, traces of the vanished St Lawrence church, a bathing area and a dog run.
The park holds valuable old growth dating back to the 19th century: maples, yews, beeches and willows. Rare and protected species also grow here, among them the tulip tree, ginkgo, London plane and honey locust.
