The Silesian Botanical Garden lies in the Mokre district of Mikołów, some fifteen kilometres south of Katowice. It is one of the youngest and, in terms of area, largest botanical gardens in Poland, run by an association of local governments and scientific institutions, including the Polish Academy of Sciences. Its purpose is to protect the biological diversity of a region heavily reshaped by industry.
The grounds are divided into collections: an orchard section with old fruit tree varieties, an ornamental part and educational areas presenting native habitats. A nature and education trail runs along the edge of the garden, with several dozen information boards and outdoor games that give the visit a clear structure.
It makes a quiet stop on a journey through the conurbation: the wide paths are passable with a pushchair, and the nature workshops are aimed at children and adults alike. A visit usually takes about an hour.
