ul. Murckowska, Katowice
Las Murckowski is a nature reserve in the southern part of Katowice protecting a fragment of old beech forest — a remnant of the former Silesian Wilderness. The area covers about a hundred hectares and ranks among the most valuable natural sites within the city, even though buildings and roads of the conurbation surround it on every side.
Beeches form the core of the stand, including specimens recognised as natural monuments and roughly two hundred years old. The undergrowth holds strictly and partially protected species, and the forest is home to birds, amphibians and small mammals. Nearby lie the Ochojec floristic reserve and the Valley of Three Ponds, the most popular recreation area in this part of Katowice.
Marked tourist trails and paths used by walkers, runners and cyclists run through the forest. Because of the reserve status, visitors must keep to the designated routes. Entry is free and possible all year, and dogs should be kept on a lead.
