Staromiejska 2, Sandomierz
Wąwóz Królowej Jadwigi cuts through the loess hills of Sandomierz just beside the castle hill, about half a kilometre from the Old Town. It is a little under half a kilometre long and runs between Staromiejska Street and Królowej Jadwigi Street. It formed in soft loess, washed out by water and worn down by centuries of foot traffic.
The path narrows and widens by turns, with vertical walls several metres high. Overhead the canopy closes in with limes, maples, elms, acacias and elder, letting through only scattered light. Exposed tree roots hang from the slopes. The ravine forms part of the Sandomierz old town ensemble listed as a Monument of History.
Walking through takes half an hour and the place looks different in every season. After rain the floor can be muddy, and the uneven surface makes it hard going with a pushchair.
