The Municipal Park in Tarnowskie Góry was created on the warpie – undulating ground built up from the spoil of the old silver, lead and zinc ore mines still working here in the 19th century. The uneven landscape, cut through with heaps and hollows, is now the site's greatest asset: instead of a flat lawn, visitors get greenery spread over the hillocks of former mining.
In 2017 the Tarnowskie Góry post-mining complex, together with the park, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an example of carefully planned reclamation of post-industrial land. Walking the alleys, one can make out remnants of the former extraction work and the stylish small architecture that orders the whole layout.
In the western part of the park lies a war cemetery with the graves of soldiers from both world wars – a quiet place that calls for respect. The park is freely accessible and well suited to a walk that combines rest with a lesson in the history of Upper Silesia.
