The Palm House and Botanical Garden occupy the north-eastern part of Oliwa Park in Gdańsk, next to the former Cistercian complex. These grounds were once part of the monastery gardens of the Cistercians, and the palm house itself was arranged inside a former 18th-century orangery — hence its intimate, historic setting.
Under glass grow heat-loving plants: imposing banana trees, aloes, prickly pears and other cacti, figs and orchids. Outside, collections of native species and plants brought from more distant climate zones are laid out so as to show the differences between them. Walking round the whole site usually takes about an hour.
The garden looks different in every season, as one species after another comes into flower — high summer is of course the richest. A visit combines easily with a walk through the whole of Oliwa Park and a look inside the Oliwa Cathedral right next door.
