A green tunnel on Towarowa Street

The bindaż in Kołobrzeg is a living garden structure: a row of trees shaped over years of pruning so that their crowns grow together above the path into a green tunnel. It stands on Towarowa Street, on the route towards the harbour, a quarter of an hour's walk from the spa district.

A rare garden form

Bindaż arbours, also called covered walks, were popular in European garden design from the Renaissance to the Baroque. Few survive in Poland, so the Kołobrzeg example has historical as well as natural value. It is formed of pruned limes and hornbeams whose interwoven branches give dense shade even in midsummer.

Who it suits

A short but striking stop for anyone looking for something in Kołobrzeg beyond the beach and the pier. The structure is protected as a natural monument and is regularly maintained. Seeing it takes about a quarter of an hour and works in any weather.
