The green island of Człuchów

Lasek Luizy Park occupies the Kujawy peninsula on the lake, right beside the ruins of the Teutonic castle in Człuchów. Laid out around 1800, it has kept its landscape, English-style layout and is listed in the register of monuments. The name commemorates the Prussian Queen Louise, who stopped here in 1807 on her way to Tilsit.

What to see

Broad walking avenues run through the park, together with a footbridge over the water and paths leading to a viewpoint over the lake and the castle hill. Among the surviving small architecture are garden pavilions and a sundial. Beeches, oaks and maples dominate the tree stand, and the older specimens create the park's characteristic, deeply shaded interiors.

Who it suits

This is a convenient break on a drive across the Krajna Lakeland: free entry, easy paths, avenues accessible for pushchairs, dogs allowed on a lead. The walk combines well with a visit to the neighbouring castle and the regional museum; an hour is enough for a loop through the park itself.
