ul. Królowej Jadwigi, Zamość
The City Park in Zamość covers about 11 hectares right next to the Old Town, which is inscribed on the UNESCO list. It was laid out in the 1920s on the grounds of the former Zamość fortress, and thanks to its natural and historical value the park itself has been entered in the register of monuments. The entrance from Królowej Jadwigi Street leads straight to the walls of the old town.
The layout is divided into an eastern, western and southern section, and its designers deliberately made use of the surviving fortifications. The face of one of the bastions was adapted into a viewpoint that shows the scale of the old defences well. Among the greenery the ramparts, escarpments and the course of the former defensive lines remain clearly readable.
In the western part, on the site of the former moat, lies a pond of about two hectares with two floating fountains lit after dusk. Swans and ducks stay on the water and along the banks, and the reservoir is regularly stocked with fish. A walk in the park pairs naturally with a tour of the Zamość old town.
