A square in the heart of Słupsk

Skwer im. Pierwszych Słupszczan lies between Stefana Starzyńskiego and Anny Łajming streets, close to the very centre of Słupsk. This small, well-kept green space with colourful plantings serves residents as a place to rest and visitors as a stop on a walk through the city.

The history of the site

The square was laid out on the grounds of the former town fortifications — one of the seventeenth-century bastions stood here, and later a shooting range used by the merchants of Słupsk together with the associated Merchants' House, renamed the Railwayman's House after the Second World War. Traces of that layered past explain the irregular shape of the layout.

What to see

Attention is drawn to the sculpture "The Humiliated" by Fritz Klimsch, moved here from the cemetery of the von Gamp family in Damnica. It shows a pensive man and is one of the most recognisable monuments in the city. On the neighbouring building, look at the large mural with figures connected to Słupsk.
