Biskupin 17, Wieś Biskupin
The Settlement in Biskupin is one of the largest archaeological reserves in Europe and a designated Monument of History. It lies in the Żnin district in the Pałuki region, on a peninsula of Lake Biskupińskie. Its core is a reconstructed fragment of a fortified Lusatian culture settlement from the Iron Age, discovered in the 1930s.
Successive stages of settlement are spread over 38 hectares: a hunter-gatherer camp, a village of the first farmers, a fortified stronghold with a palisade and wooden streets, an early Piast village, cist graves and a Pałuki cottage. These are complemented by permanent exhibitions, including „Dawn of History by Lake Biskupińskie” and „The Age of the First Farmers”, as well as temporary displays.
The „Diabeł Wenecki” boat sails on the lake and is available to museum visitors. The grounds are extensive and mostly unpaved, so comfortable shoes and at least two hours are worth planning. The historic Żnin County Railway also runs to Biskupin.
