Mining underground in Zabrze

Sztolnia Królowa Luiza is an extensive post-mining complex in Zabrze, part of the Coal Mining Museum. It consists of the underground workings of a former colliery and the 19th-century Main Hereditary Adit. The entrances are in three places — on Wolności, Mochnackiego and Miarki streets — and visits take place with a guide.

Underground routes

The Water Route leads through the corridors of the former drainage adit; a large part of it is covered by boat, passing underground harbours and passing bays. The Family Route shows how coal was extracted — working mining machines, narrow galleries and the story of miners' everyday life and of Silesian culture.

The surface part

Above ground there are Park 12C with a playground and a maze, and the Military Technology Park with a collection of military equipment. The temperature underground stays low all year round, so a warm jacket is useful even in summer. Visits require booking in advance.
