The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in Oświęcim in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship covers the grounds of the largest German Nazi concentration and extermination camp, which operated from 1940 to 1945. About 1.1 million people died here, most of them Jews deported from all over occupied Europe.
The route covers two parts: Auschwitz I, with its preserved brick blocks and exhibitions, and Auschwitz II-Birkenau a few kilometres away, with the ramp, the barracks and the ruins of the gas chambers. Entry requires a pass booked in advance, and visits are made individually or in groups with an educator.
This is a place of remembrance — appropriate dress and conduct are required, and a visit is not recommended for children under fourteen. The site also houses the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust, with permanent and temporary exhibitions and workshop programmes.
