ul. Rynek 4, Olkusz
Podziemny Olkusz is an underground tourist route in the centre of Olkusz in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. The exhibition is spread across two locations — the cellars of the former town hall and the space beneath the district office — and its subject is the beginnings of the town and centuries of lead and silver ore mining.
Beneath the old town hall the displays combine exhibits with multimedia and film screenings recounting the events that shaped the town. The second route, under the former Royal Quarter, is devoted to mining and metallurgical traditions: visualisations show the workings, the machinery and the daily labour of the miners.
A separate thread of the exhibition concerns Marcin Bylica, an astronomer and astrologer linked with Olkusz whose attribute was the astrolabe. The tour takes place underground, so the temperature is lower than on the surface — a warmer layer is useful whatever the season.
