The Museum of Folk Architecture in Olsztynek covers nearly 94 hectares and ranks among the largest open-air museums in Poland. It gathers the rural architecture of Warmia, Masuria, Powiśle and Lithuania Minor: dwelling houses, farm buildings, industrial and sacred structures from the 19th and 20th centuries, spread across a natural setting of woods and meadows.
The cottage interiors are filled with everyday utensils and tools used in the fields and in craft workshops. An animal enclosure operates on the grounds, where you can see cold-blooded horses and Polish koniks, Skudde sheep, Suwałki geese and rabbits. The village gardens are planted with perennials, vegetables, fruit shrubs and trees typical of the region.
The extensive grounds with paths between the farmsteads invite an unhurried walk and work well for visits with children. The museum runs museum lessons and workshops for groups, and in season it organises picnics presenting old farm work. Olsztynek lies on the route from Warsaw to Masuria.
