The Piast Stronghold in Kalisz is an archaeological reserve in Zawodzie, the oldest part of the city, run as a branch of the local museum. A fortified stronghold functioned here from the 9th century, one of the more important centres of early medieval Greater Poland, closely tied to the beginnings of the Polish state.
From the Kalisz stronghold the Piasts probably set out to conquer neighbouring centres, among them Ostrów Lednicki and Gniezno. Excavations uncovered traces of ramparts, buildings and a burial ground, which made it possible to reconstruct the layout and the scale of a settlement from over a thousand years ago.
The reserve holds reconstructions of medieval structures: a wooden bridge, a moat, an entrance gate with a palisade and stockade, and furnished huts. Animals are kept here as part of experimental archaeology, and visitors can see a field cultivated by the old three-field method.
