The Kashubian Pottery Workshop in Chmielno is the family studio of the Necel family, run by the same family for ten generations. It lies in the heart of Kashubian Switzerland, on Lake Białe, in a village surrounded by a chain of lakes and moraine hills. It is one of the oldest continuously working centres of folk pottery in Poland.
On site you can see a display of work by the last three generations of the family and follow the making of a vessel — from throwing on the wheel to decoration. Visitors take part in pottery workshops and try their own hand at the wheel, while finished ceramics can be bought in the shop next to the studio. A visit with the hosts' commentary takes about an hour.
Necel ceramics are recognisable by their characteristic decoration: the lilac sprig, the small and large tulip, the Kashubian star, the fish scale, the Kashubian wreath and the lily. The popularity of the ware grew in the 1920s, and to this day vessels from Chmielno are regarded as one of the symbols of the region.
