The Museum of the Mazovian Village in Sierpc is a large open-air museum on the edge of town, recreating the layout of an old row village of north-western Mazovia. Instead of single cottages lined up in a row, visitors see an entire settlement: farmsteads with outbuildings, orchards, kitchen gardens, apiaries and lanes running between the homesteads. The exhibition covers a wide area, so a visit is essentially a walk.
The cottage interiors are furnished according to the wealth of their former owners — from poor rooms with the barest equipment to the houses of better-off farmers. A separate highlight is the sculpture gallery, holding around a thousand wooden figures made by carvers of the Sierpc woodcarving circle. Religious buildings and public-use structures moved here from nearby villages complete the picture.
The museum works well for a visit with children: plenty of space, farm animals and demonstrations of old crafts. It is a common stop on the route from Mazovia towards Toruń and the northern lake districts.
