The Museum of the Opole Countryside lies in Bierkowice on the western edge of Opole, by the road towards Wrocław. Its extensive grounds gather the wooden rural architecture of the Opole region from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, brought here from surrounding villages and arranged in a layout that recalls a real village.
The collection includes cottages and whole farmsteads, a church, wayside shrines, a village school, an inn, a smithy and windmills, which are among the most recognisable features of the site. The interiors are equipped with farming tools and everyday objects, and the surroundings of the buildings — gardens, fences and lanes — were recreated to convey the character of the old settlement.
The museum runs craft and nature workshops, museum lessons and classes in painting Opole porcelain. Large outdoor events take place through the year, among them the Easter fair, the harvest festival and the Christmas market — it is worth checking the calendar before a visit.
