The Silesian Museum stands in the Culture Zone of Katowice, on the grounds of the closed Katowice colliery, next to the Spodek arena and the NOSPR concert hall. Most of the exhibition space is buried underground — only glazed skylights rise above the surface, while the former winding tower of the Warszawa shaft now serves as a viewpoint over the city.
The permanent exhibition „Light of History. Upper Silesia through the Ages” traces the industrial and political fortunes of the region. Alongside it are galleries of Polish art from 1800–1945 and after 1945, a gallery of naive art and the Polish Stage Design Centre. The collections also cover archaeology, ethnology and photography, and the programme is rounded out by temporary shows.
The museum offers activities for families, schools and kindergartens, including art workshops on varied themes. The buildings are suited to visiting with a pushchair, and the trip is easy to combine with a walk around the Culture Zone.
