The composer's birthplace

The manor house in Żelazowa Wola in western Mazovia is where Fryderyk Chopin was born. The composer's family occupied the annexe of a manor belonging to the Skarbek counts, relatives of the pianist's mother. They lived here only briefly, yet the address became a permanent fixture of the Chopin trail. The site lies on the Utrata river, about 50 km from Warsaw.

What to see

The interiors recreate the father's room with a fireplace, the mother's room, the children's room and the dining room. The layout is symbolic, as the original plan of the flat is unknown. The annexe holds an artistic exhibition devoted to the composer, while modern pavilions in the park house a screening room with a film about Żelazowa Wola and a concert hall used for piano recitals.

Park and surroundings

The manor is surrounded by a landscape park of about 7 hectares, designed as a setting for the museum, with avenues, ponds and rich tree cover. A walk through the park can matter as much as the visit indoors. The pavilions house the ticket office, a café, a restaurant and a souvenir shop.
