The Białowieża Forest under one roof

The Nature and Forest Museum of Białowieża National Park stands in the Palace Park in Białowieża, by the entrance to the park grounds. The display tells the story of the last natural lowland forest in Europe: how it is built, which animals and plants live in it and how it has changed over the centuries. Instead of labelled cases it uses dioramas with light and sound effects and multimedia presentations.

What to see

The central part of the exhibition is devoted to the European bison — the species whose restitution began in Białowieża in 1929 and which became the symbol of the forest. Further rooms present the other forest animals, the life cycle of the tree stand and the relationship between people and the forest: wild beekeeping, forestry and nature protection. The visit ends at the viewing tower with a panorama of the area, included in the ticket.

Who it suits

The multimedia format works well for a visit with children and in any weather. The museum is often the starting point before entering the Strict Reserve or seeing the bison show reserve.
