Wałbrzych's post-industrial landmark

Stara Kopalnia in Wałbrzych is a science and art centre set up on the grounds of the former Julia hard coal mine, earlier known as Thorez. The complex opened in 2014 and covers about 4.5 hectares of historic industrial buildings: shafts, winding towers, machine halls and sorting plants. It is one of the largest post-industrial tourist sites in Poland.

What to see

The core of the offer is the Museum of Industry and Technology with exhibitions on coal mining, alongside a Contemporary Art Gallery and a Centre of Unique Ceramics. Visitors are guided by former miners who worked at this pit, so the account of underground work comes first hand. Night tours are also possible, in a completely different light.

Who it suits

The place works well for families and school groups: museum lessons and ceramics workshops are tailored to the age of the participants. Most exhibitions are housed in the halls, so the weather does not limit the visit. The Sztygarówka café operates on site and the complex also offers guest rooms.
