Jana Długosza 9, Sandomierz
Długosz House in Sandomierz is a brick building raised in the 15th century thanks to a foundation by the chronicler Jan Długosz, originally intended for the priests of the collegiate church. It stands on the escarpment near the cathedral, within the historic complex of the Old Town. Since 1937 it has housed the Diocesan Museum, whose collection had been assembled since the 19th century.
The display fills several rooms without any division into thematic sections — exactly as its founder arranged it, accepting gifts from one donor after another. Alongside works of religious art and mementoes of the diocese's history there are old books, decorative crafts, textiles, furniture and national keepsakes. The Gothic interior of the building is impressive in itself.
The collection may seem chaotic, yet that is precisely its value: it preserves a 19th-century way of gathering and presenting relics. The museum stands a few steps from the cathedral and the castle, so it fits naturally into a walk around Sandomierz.
