The African Museum named after Dr Bogdan Szczygieł and Bożena Szczygieł-Gruszyńska operates in Olkusz, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, on the edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. It is one of the largest institutions in Poland devoted to the cultures of West and Central Africa. The collection was built up thanks to private donors who handed over objects gathered during long stays on the continent.
The exhibition presents the art, crafts and everyday life of Africa's inhabitants. There are ritual masks, wooden sculptures, textiles, weapons, vessels and household items, as well as an extensive section of musical instruments. A separate place is given to material on the Dogon of Mali and the Tuareg — peoples with a distinct culture and tradition. Almost 750 objects came to the museum from Anna and Jan Kubarski.
A visit takes about an hour and works in any weather, including with children, for whom the exotic exhibits are an engaging geography lesson. The museum is part of the municipal cultural centre in the centre of Olkusz, close to the market square and the other monuments of the old town.
