Ofiar Katynia 5, Żarki
The Old Mill — Museum of Ancient Crafts occupies a former watermill in Żarki, on the edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. For centuries the town lay on the trade route from Lesser Poland to Silesia and was known for its milling families. After a thorough renovation the building opened in 2015 as a multimedia museum.
The interior retains the mill's original equipment — machines, gearing and devices for grinding grain. Further stations present the crafts that Żarki lived by: coopering, wheelwrighting and shoemaking. Touchscreens, projections and recordings give a voice to former residents, and a separate part tells the story of Piotr Steinkeller, the nineteenth-century owner of the town.
The museum is well suited to a visit with children, and groups and school trips can book shoemaking workshops or a grain-milling demonstration. A visit takes about an hour and does not depend on the weather. Żarki is a good base for the Upland — the castle ruins of the Trail of the Eagles' Nests and the limestone outcrops.
