Grodziszczko 2, Wieś Giecz
The Archaeological Reserve – Piast Stronghold in Giecz protects the remains of one of the most important centres of the first Piast monarchy. Today Giecz is a quiet village in the Środa district of Greater Poland, but in the 10th and 11th centuries it was a castellan stronghold of a rank comparable to Poznań and Gniezno. The site is a branch of the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica.
The route leads along the ramparts, still clearly legible in the landscape, and across ground where relics of stone buildings were uncovered — including the remains of a palatial complex from the early 11th century in the south-eastern part of the stronghold. The exhibition pavilion shows finds from the excavations and the permanent display “Terra Sancta – Giecz in the Piast Monarchy”, complemented by temporary exhibitions.
About an hour is enough to see the reserve. A large part of the route runs in the open. The terrain is largely accessible for wheelchairs. Giecz lies on the Piast Trail, close to Lednica and Ostrów Lednicki, so a visit can be combined with other sites of early Piast Greater Poland.
