The Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica covers Ostrów Lednicki — an island on Lake Lednickie near Dziekanowice, halfway between Gniezno and Poznań. One of the main strongholds of the Piasts stood here, a centre of power and defence at the beginnings of the state. The museum displays are spread between the island and the lakeshore.
The island preserves ramparts and ruins of walls several metres high, remains of the palatium and of a chapel with baptismal basins, linked by researchers with the baptism of Mieszko I. In the lake waters, elements of wooden bridges, weapons and armour of warriors and medieval sacred objects were found.
The island is reached by a crossing, so visiting depends on the weather and the season. It is worth checking the calendar of events — in summer historical festivities such as Kupala Night take place here. The museum also has branches on the mainland, including the open-air museum in Dziekanowice.
