Kletno 40, Wieś Kletno
The Uranium Mine in Kletno lies in the Śnieżnik Massif, not far from Międzygórze and the Bear Cave. Uranium ore was extracted here between 1948 and 1953, although the local deposits of iron, copper and silver were worked as early as the Middle Ages. The underground workings total about 37 kilometres, spread over twenty adits linked by three shafts.
Adit no. 18, about 400 metres long, is open to visitors. The route runs through narrow, vividly coloured corridors where mineral veins and traces of the miners' work are visible. Guides talk about the history of mining, the geology of the Śnieżnik Massif and the formation of the local deposits. The tour takes just under an hour and is possible individually, in a group or with an audio guide.
The temperature underground stays at around 7 degrees, so warmer clothing is needed even in summer. The route is safe — radiation levels pose no risk to visitors. The mine also runs geology workshops and exploratory trips into workings that are otherwise closed.
