Istebna 824, Wieś Istebna
The historic cottage of Jan Kawulok stands in Istebna in the Silesian Beskids, near the Czech and Slovak borders. The wooden house was built in 1863 and has kept the layout and details typical of Silesian highlander building. It belongs to the Wooden Architecture Route of the Silesian Voivodeship and takes its name from the family of musicians and storytellers who lived here for generations.
The interior preserves the original furnishings of the main room: farm tools, vessels, costumes and textiles. The strongest impression is made by the collection of folk shepherds' instruments — bagpipes, horns, fujara flutes, pipes and ocarinas, some of which can still sound in the guide's hands. The cottage is living evidence of the culture of the Beskid Trójwieś: Istebna, Jaworzynka and Koniaków.
A visit takes about an hour and works particularly well with children, especially when music accompanies the tour. Arranged in advance, workshops in lacemaking, carving or butter making are available. The area is a good base for Złoty Groń and the trails of the Silesian Beskids.
