The city's history in the Esken House

The Toruń History Museum occupies the Esken House — a former patrician townhouse converted into a granary, standing on Łazienna Street in the old town. The display leads through the city's past from prehistory to the present, making heavy use of multimedia.

Floor by floor

Each storey corresponds to a period: the ground floor covers prehistory and the Middle Ages, above it come the early modern centuries, and then the life of the townspeople in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cases hold coins, weapons, clothing and everyday objects, among them a surviving Enigma cipher machine.

Multimedia and activities

A visit ends with a 3D film about the key moments in Toruń's history. You can also study a perspective plan of the city from the 17th century and models of the town hall, the Teutonic castle and the New Town. Education rooms in the cellars offer interactive tasks for younger visitors.
