Pl. Katedralny 6, Tarnów
The institution has been running since 1888 and is the oldest diocesan museum in the country. It was founded by Father Józef Bąba at the theological seminary; between the wars the collections moved to the town hall, and today they occupy a group of old-town houses on Plac Katedralny: the former Akademiola, Dom Mikołajowski, Dom Mansjonariuszy and Scholasteria.
The core of the display is Gothic painting and sculpture of the so-called Kraków and Sącz school, one of the most important bodies of medieval art in Poland. A separate section holds liturgical textiles from the Middle Ages to the 19th century and folk paintings on glass, also from outside Poland. Later painting is represented by works of Jacek Malczewski, Vlastimil Hofman, Kazimierz Sichulski and Wojciech Weiss.
A visit takes about an hour and combines easily with a walk around the old town, as the museum stands next to the cathedral and the market square. It is a good choice for anyone interested in sacred art, regional history and folk culture; the rooms are wheelchair accessible and admission is free.
