Jana Ewangelisty Purkyniego 11, Stare Miasto, Wrocław
The monumental canvas, 15 by 114 metres, fills a purpose-built rotunda on Purkyniego Street, a few minutes on foot from the Wrocław Market Square. It was created under the direction of Jan Styka and Wojciech Kossak and depicts the Battle of Racławice of 1794. Today it is a branch of the National Museum in Wrocław.
Visitors climb onto a platform in the middle of the rotunda and view the canvas from a single point, surrounded by the painting on every side. The sense of depth is reinforced by a faux terrain, stage props and hidden light sources, so the boundary between the painting and real space blurs. Viewings run in fixed slots with commentary, so it is worth booking tickets in advance.
The painting was made in Lviv and displayed there until the Second World War; it reached Wrocław afterwards and was opened to the public only in the 1980s. The rotunda stands next to the main National Museum building, so both branches are easy to combine in one visit. Around it lie a park and the boulevards along the Odra.
