Fort Anioła is a former defensive work that belonged to the Prussian coastal fortress developed in the late 19th century. Its circular form with a courtyard in the middle recalls the Castle of the Holy Angel in Rome, and that association gave the site its present name. The fort stands in the seaside part of the town, on the island of Uznam.
The display fills several rooms of the old casemates. The Viking Room shows replicas of armour and uniforms of knights and soldiers from various periods, which visitors may try on. The Navigation Room gathers shipboard equipment from the years 1960 to 1990, used on Polish, Soviet and East German vessels: sextants, ship clocks, anemometers and map containers, along with a collection of cap ribbons from sailors of Baltic fleets.
Today the fort also serves as a meeting place: there is a restaurant on site, and cultural events as well as exhibitions of painting, sculpture and photography are held here. A visit usually takes about an hour and combines easily with a walk through the seaside district of Świnoujście.
