A village of a century ago

The Museum of Agriculture in Ciechanowiec in Podlasie combines an open-air museum of wooden architecture with extensive museum collections. More than 33 thousand objects have been gathered here, among them cottages, farm buildings and structures of old rural industry from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, set out in open ground by the Nurzec river.

What to see

The holdings are divided into departments: ethnography, history and art, rural architecture, agricultural machinery, the history of livestock breeding, the history of plant cultivation, herbal traditions and the Museum of Veterinary Medicine. Together they form 44 permanent displays, from living quarters and craft workshops to farm machines and everyday household tools.

Who it suits

The museum runs workshops, demonstrations and lessons for children and young people, and through the year it holds outdoor events linked to folk customs and crafts, among them Palm Sunday, the St Wojciech Fair, the Podlasie Bread Festival and the potato harvest by the windmill. Touring the extensive grounds means a fair walk, so allow at least an hour.
