Bunkrowa 2, Świnoujście
Fort Gerharda, also known as the East Fort or Werk II, stands in the Warszów district on the eastern side of the shipping channel, near the lighthouse. Built between 1848 and 1859, it is the oldest structure of the Świnoujście Fortress and one of the best preserved coastal forts in Europe.
The gun platforms, barracks, the ammunition lift shaft and two caponiers linked to the fort by underground tunnels have all survived. The interiors hold several thousand exhibits arranged into themed displays on artillery, the history of Świnoujście, the fortress kitchen and small arms. On the parade ground stands the wreck of an armoured carrier recovered from the sea.
The fort is toured with a guide dressed as a Prussian artilleryman, in the form of a staged performance with a cannon firing demonstration. The route crosses uneven ground and dark corridors, so sturdy shoes and warmer clothing help. A free ferry crossing links the city centre with Warszów.
