Święty Krzyż 1, Nowa Słupia
The crypt lies in the undercroft of the former Benedictine abbey on Łysa Góra, one of the highest summits of the Łysogóry range in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. It is visited as part of the monastery tour, reached from Nowa Słupia by the Royal Route. Several burial crypts have survived below the church.
The centrepiece is a glazed coffin holding a mummified body, traditionally linked with Prince Jeremi Wiśniowiecki. A portrait of the prince hangs above it, and the remains are dressed in a costume from the film adaptation of With Fire and Sword. Radiocarbon and radiological studies have not confirmed the identity of the deceased, which only keeps the legend alive.
The descent into the crypt is short and usually combined with a visit to the church and the monastery museum. The undercroft stays cool whatever the season. Święty Krzyż lies within the Świętokrzyski National Park: the summit is reached on foot along a marked trail, and a viewing tower stands beside the monastery.
