A former engine shed in the Podhale region

The Railway Rolling Stock Open-Air Museum in Chabówka occupies the grounds of a former locomotive depot at a junction on the line running from Kraków towards Zakopane. It gathers one of the largest collections of historic rail vehicles in Poland, displayed on several disused tracks and inside the old depot building.

The collection

On show are steam locomotives of various classes, diesel and electric engines, passenger and freight carriages, railway cranes and special maintenance stock. The building houses an exhibition on the history of the railway in this part of the Carpathians. Some of the machines remain in working order and are kept operational.

Heritage trains

Thanks to that working stock, the museum runs occasional heritage train excursions, among others along the route of the former Galician Transversal Railway and to Zakopane. Carriages and locomotives from Chabówka have been lent to film crews, appearing for instance in the film "Katyń". Touring the display itself takes about an hour.
