The nature of the Bieszczady indoors

The Natural History Museum of the Bieszczady National Park operates in Ustrzyki Dolne, at the gateway to the range, and serves as an introduction before heading into the mountains. The display presents the geology, fauna and flora of the park, with the sequence of rooms following the successive natural zones of the massif.

What you will see

The route leads from the nature of the foothills, through the lower montane forests, up to the połoniny — the open highland meadows that are the most recognisable landscape of the Bieszczady. Exhibits include rocks from the park, remains of a woolly rhinoceros and mounted specimens of large mammals: brown bear, wolf and lynx. The arrangement gives a coherent picture of the whole protected area.

Good to know

The institution also carries out research and educational work, including classes for groups. A visit takes about an hour and fills a rainy day well, when the trails higher up in the park are less accessible. Ustrzyki Dolne itself is a natural base before driving deeper into the mountains.
