A museum in Poland's first capital

Muzeum Początków Państwa Polskiego in Gniezno tells the story of the birth of Polish statehood and of the early Middle Ages. It stands by Lake Jelonek, a few minutes' walk from Gniezno cathedral, in a building raised specifically for the collection.

Exhibitions

The permanent displays present archaeological finds from Piast strongholds, weaponry, everyday objects and reconstructions illustrating life in the tenth and eleventh centuries. Temporary exhibitions, usually linked to the collection, round out the offer.

Good to know

The museum runs lessons and workshops for children, teenagers and adults. It is one of the few institutions that admit visitors with pets — the rules for entering with a dog are set out in the regulations published on the museum website.
