Czartoryskich 8, Puławy
The Temple of the Sibyl stands in the Czartoryski palace and park complex in Puławy, on the escarpment above the Vistula valley, and belongs to the Czartoryski Museum. The rotunda was built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries on the initiative of Princess Izabela Czartoryska, modelled on the ancient Temple of Vesta in Tivoli.
It was created as the first museum in Polish lands open to the public. National mementoes were gathered inside – arms, documents and objects linked with the Sieniawski, Lubomirski and Czartoryski families and with figures of merit for the country, among them Prince Józef Poniatowski. The collection was arranged in two circular rooms.
The architecture itself is striking: a sandstone colonnade of the Corinthian order, a frieze with griffins and candelabra, the arcades of the lower storey and the dome crowning the building. The temple is one stop on a walk through the Puławy park with its pavilions, bridges and Gothic House.
