Świętokrzyska 59, Nowa Słupia
The Archaeological Centre in Nowa Słupia lies at the foot of Łysa Góra, on the edge of the Świętokrzyski National Park. On a site of several hectares a settlement from the Roman period has been reconstructed, based on excavations carried out in this area – one of the largest centres of ancient iron smelting in Europe.
The route leads among huts, workshops and bloomery furnaces in which iron was smelted from ore mined in nearby open pits. The reconstructions show the daily life of the Przeworsk culture some two thousand years ago: farming, metalworking, pottery and weaving.
The centre stages demonstrations of ancient crafts and re-enactments, including Roman legionaries. Its best-known event is the “Dymarki Świętokrzyskie” festival with a display smelting of iron. The exhibition is largely in the open air, so sturdy footwear comes in handy.
