Wieś Będkowice
The archaeological reserve in Będkowice lies in the Ślęża Massif, a dozen or so kilometres south-west of Wrocław. It protects the remains of an early medieval fortified settlement and a barrow cemetery of the Ślężanie, a tribe that inhabited Lower Silesia in the 8th and 9th centuries. The site covers about 50 hectares.
A forest path leads past burial mounds ringed by a rampart and a dry moat, a stone ritual circle and a pond. The heart of the reserve is a pair of reconstructed huts with a well, showing the everyday life of the stronghold's inhabitants. Wooden warrior sculptures guard the entrance, and a nearby archaeological meeting place offers a shelter, a fire pit and an exhibition.
This is a place for families and archaeology enthusiasts who prefer to sightsee outdoors. The site opens seasonally and a visit doubles as a walk through the woods, so sturdy shoes are useful. The reserve fits well into a trip around the Ślęża Landscape Park and an ascent of Ślęża itself.
