Zaułek 2, Złotoryja
The Gold Museum occupies a historic 17th-century townhouse in Złotoryja, once built into the town's defensive walls. Its mansard roof catches the eye and sets the building apart from the surrounding architecture. It was adapted for museum use in the 1970s. The site was first cared for by the local branch of the Polish Tourist Society, then by the Society of Friends of the Złotoryja Region, and today it is run by the Złotoryja Cultural Centre.
The exhibition tells the story of gold mining in Złotoryja and its surroundings, the source of the town's wealth in the Middle Ages. The collections span geology, numismatics, archaeology and the history of mining technology. A large part of the exhibits comes from the collection of Leopold Schmeterling, a teacher and collector from Tarnopol.
The museum cooperates with academic institutions from the region and across the country, so its holdings keep growing. A visit is easy to combine with a walk around the old town of Złotoryja and with gold panning on the Kaczawa river, for which the town is known and around which it organises competitions.
