The Lipce of the novel The Peasants

The Regional Museum named after Władysław Stanisław Reymont operates in Lipce Reymontowskie, a village north-east of Łódź immortalised in the novel The Peasants. It occupies the former textile manufactory of the Winkiel family, one of the few complexes in Poland where both the buildings and a complete set of machines have survived, allowing the full production cycle of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries to be followed.

What to see

The collections are divided into several thematic displays: the traditions of Lipce, old farming tools, clay sculptures inspired by The Peasants, the history of the Winkiel manufactory, the writer's travel letters and a presentation of contemporary folk art. The ethnographic section holds regional costumes, embroidery, textiles and the furnishings of old cottages.

The surroundings

The village has kept the name and atmosphere of its literary model, so a museum visit is worth combining with a walk around Lipce and a stop at other places linked to Reymont's work. It makes a convenient stop on the route between Łódź and Skierniewice.
