The mountaineer's family home

The Jerzy Kukuczka Memorial Room is located in Istebna, in the hamlet of Wilcze, in the house where one of the world's greatest Himalayan climbers spent his childhood and to which he returned between expeditions. The place was created on the initiative of the family of the climber, who died on the south face of Lhotse.

What you will see inside

The display gathers mementoes of the conqueror of the eight-thousanders: expedition photographs, climbing equipment, decorations, medals and books. The collection shows not only the successive summits, but also the everyday life of a man of the mountains — preparations, expedition planning and returns to the house in the Beskids.

Good to know

Visits are intimate and guided, arranged in advance by telephone — this is not a museum you simply walk into from the street. Istebna lies in the Silesian Beskids, near Koniaków and Wisła, so a visit is easy to combine with a mountain hike along the surrounding ridges.
