A Bieszczady museum of nature and hunting

The Knieja Museum of Nature and Hunting stands in the village of Nowosiółki in Lesko County, at the threshold of the Bieszczady Mountains. Its collections are devoted to the fauna and flora of this part of the Carpathians and to the hunting traditions that shaped mountain village life for generations. Extensive field photography accompanies the displays.

What to see

The exhibitions lead through the successive layers of the Bieszczady forest, from small mammals and birds to the largest animals of the Carpathian wilderness. A second section covers the history of hunting in the region and its influence on today's landscape. You may tour on your own or with a guide who adds field knowledge and explains how to read animal tracks.

Beyond the exhibition rooms

A nature trail called On the Trail of the Carpathian Forest Dwellers begins at the museum, and the hosts also organise off-road trips into remote corners of the Bieszczady; these last several hours and need to be planned into the day. A trout fry house on site serves fish from nearby waters alongside regional cooking.
