A museum in the heart of Zakopane

The Main Building of the Tytus Chałubiński Tatra Museum stands on Krupówki street, right in the centre of Zakopane. It is the oldest museum institution in the region, devoted to the nature of the Tatras and the culture of Podhale; its patron was a physician and researcher who made Zakopane famous.

Permanent exhibitions

The ethnographic display presents the interiors of a highland cottage — the black and the white room — and traditional farming in the rocky Podhale. The historical section covers settlement and the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when Zakopane became a fashionable spa and a meeting place for the artistic bohemia. The natural history exhibition explains the geology of the Tatras, their flora, fauna and mountain weather.

Who it suits

It is a good idea for a rainy day in Zakopane and a sensible introduction before setting off into the Tatras. A visit takes about an hour and the building is accessible to wheelchair users. The very centre, however, makes parking a larger vehicle difficult.
