Steam machines by the historic mine

The Steam Machinery Open-Air Museum in Tarnowskie Góry was created next to the Historic Silver Mine and presents the machines that once powered ore extraction and the drainage of the local workings. The exhibition is spread over open ground in front of the mine entrance, so it can be seen regardless of whether you go underground.

What to see

Around twenty-five technical monuments from the age of steam are gathered here: a steam generating set, a machine driving an exhaust fan, a piston vacuum engine with a flywheel, a drum winding engine, drainage pumps and a steam road roller. The colourful steam locomotives, which look to children like giant toys, draw particular attention. A narrow-gauge train runs around a half-kilometre loop on the site.

Good to know

The visit takes half an hour and takes place outdoors; the ground is flat, accessible for prams and open to dogs. In September the site hosts the Steam Festival, when the machines are shown in motion. The underground workings of Tarnowskie Góry are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
